Get ready for another round of Cosmopolitans. A Sex and the City sequel could be in the works, following the success of the big-screen outing of Carrie and co.

One of the movie’s main financial backers, HBO, has confirmed that Sex and the City 2 is in “the early stages of development”. “We’re really heartened by the fans’ enthusiasm. There is a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO’s programming group.

Lombardo added that they were working with the film’s distributor, Warner Brothers, to prepare a follow-up movie, saying that the interest at the studio for such as film was “enormous”.

“They’re trying, with our help, to put that together now,” he told reporters. The desire to make a sequel was further confirmed by Lombardo’s colleague, HBO co-president Richard Plepler. He told People magazine they were “absolutely interested” in making another Sex and the City movie.

“Everybody came away feeling very excited by [the first film's] quality and its success, so that always invites the possibility of a continuation,” Plepler said. “It’s really up to [director] Michael Patrick [King] and Sarah Jessica [Parker] and the rest of the girls … Yeah, I think there’s a likely possibility.”

However, there is still quite a long way before the quartet traipses down the world’s red carpets in their Manolo Blahniks again. So far, no script has been written and no deal signed with the cast.

Sex and the City: the Movie, which is still playing in cinemas, has been a box-office success since its release on May 30. It has so far made nearly $345m (£171m), thanks largely to the legions of fans of the original TV series.
